Chapter 11

“Harvey! This is brilliant stuff!” Greg laughed leaning back in his chair as he flicked through the pages.

Harvey shifted nervously in his chair as he watched Greg devour his soul in paper form. He was praying tightly that Greg didn’t put two and two together and figure out who the story was about.

“I wasn’t sure if you’d like it,” Harvey mumbled nervously.

“It’s so raw! It’s so real! Who is this Benjamin character based on?” Greg asked, looking over the top of the pages.

“Completely fictional,” Harvey lied, not wanting to say ‘George’.

George was sat next to Harvey smiling politely. He didn’t want Greg to know that he was in the dark. He wanted to keep up the illusion that he’d been training Harvey to be the next big thing, but he hadn’t done anything.

“And the wife, Becky? Fictional too?” Greg asked smiling as he flicked through the pages, devouring the story.

Harvey nodded. He could feel a dry lump rising in his throat. The plastic cup of water in his hand was shaking violently, spilling drops onto the white floor. He wanted to speak, but he could feel George’s questioning eyes burning into his skin. He was convinced that Greg’s little scraps of information were starting to put the pieces of the jigsaw together.

“I really like the Harry character,” Greg said, slamming the manuscript on his desk, “he’s so real and likeable. I’m already rooting for him. I think it’s so clever how you’ve got Benjamin caught between his lover and his wife. You’ve really made Benjamin a confused man and it really works!”

George coughed as he took a sip of his own water. His face turned bright red, but Harvey couldn’t look at him. Instead he stared intensely at Greg’s thick grey hair that was neatly quiffed back off Greg’s lined forehead.

“I’m really pleased you like it,” Harvey smiled, still shaking.

He could feel George fidgeting uncomfortably in the chair next to him, but he still didn’t turn to look.

“There’s some things that need changing, and I’ll need to see a treatment for the rest of the book, but I’m pretty positive this is something we’d be interested in,” Greg smiled at Harvey.

George could almost see the dollar signs in Greg’s eyes.

“Are you serious?” Harvey laughed, this time looking at George.

George didn’t meet his eyes, he just smiled awkwardly to the ground.

“You’ve got raw talent boy,” Greg beamed as he stood up, “that’s what I like. You can’t teach what you do.”

He walked over to a filing cabinet and pulled out a document. He slapped it on the desk and slid it across to Harvey.

“This is the kind of deal we’d offer you. You’d get a small advance, and it’d be a limited run at first, but with the right promotion, there’d be room to extend your contract,” Greg smiled slyly as Harvey devoured the information on the white piece of paper.

Harvey couldn’t believe he was staring at his dream right in front of him. It was all there in black and white.
